Islamic Art Level 1 focuses on developing students' skills and technical knowledge through project-based learning throughout the academic year. Students will engage with projects centred on calligraphy, geometry, and biomorphic patterns. This level aims to immerse students in a variety of skills, including journaling, research, historical learning, material exploration, and fine motor skill development. The curriculum for this period of Islamic Art will concentrate on North Africa and Andalusia. Each project will explore a specific Islamic art tradition, delving into its history, development, and materials, culminating in a practical project. By the end of the academic year, students will have a journal documenting their process and four to six projects to present at the end-of-year exhibition.

Key Objectives

  • Artistic awareness: Develop the fundamentals of Islamic Art in understanding geometry, free hand drawing, and writing clearly in Sudani script.
  • Cultural awareness: Gain insights into understanding the principles of Islamic Arts.
  • Basic understanding and application: For students to be able to draw and tessellate simple patterns, understand the underlying geometry, use materials around them to make stains for paper, to understand and make biomorphic patterns.
  • Research and Observation: Carrying out research, recording findings and creating a final project piece incorporating one, two, or all of the Islamic Art principles learned in the course.
  • Reading and Writing: Identify, read and write Riqa’a and Maghrebi script proficiently.

    Description

    Islamic Art Level 1 focuses on developing students’ skills and technical knowledge through project-based learning throughout the academic year. Students will engage with projects centred on calligraphy, geometry, and biomorphic patterns. This level aims to immerse students in a variety of skills, including journaling, research, historical learning, material exploration, and fine motor skill development. The curriculum for this period of Islamic Art will concentrate on North Africa and Andalusia. Each project will explore a specific Islamic art tradition, delving into its history, development, and materials, culminating in a practical project. By the end of the academic year, students will have a journal documenting their process and four to six projects to present at the end-of-year exhibition.

    Theme: North Africa & Andalucia 

    Calligraphy – In calligraphy we will be covering projects on square Kufic, Magrebi and revision of Sudani script. We will be studying manuscripts to understand script culture, the material culture and what we can replicate from it.

    Geometry – We will be focusing on 4-fold and 8-fold patterns based on patterns from North Africa and Southern Spain. We will be exploring different materials within the projects, such as cutting, paper folding, building structure, air-dry clay or similar materials, and learning to use pigments and different mordants.

    Biomorphic Forms – We will also be focusing on freehand drawing of floral patterns and creating projects based on floral patterns from North Africa and Andalusia.

    Cost: £400 per year, payable in 10 monthly instalments of £40.00.

    Requirements

    Age Group: This course is designed for students aged 10 years.

    Prerequisites: Stewards Islamic Art Level 0 (previously known as Year 7). For those outside Stewards.ONE,  a submission of a portfolio or interview can be done.

    Materials: Below is a list of tools needed for the program: This is not an exhaustive list; however, it is the basic tools needed to start with.

    *These must be purchased separately and independent of the course enrolment fee.

    Good quality compass set ( Jakar, Rotoring brand), 30 cm and 50/60 cm rulers, Pencils, Eraser, A3 cartridge paper pad, A3 Binder/folder, Bamboo/Reed calligraphy pen size 3 or 4, Black Sumi ink, likka/silk thread, Matt glossy paper, Paintbrush, Watercolour paper pad, Tracing paper, Masking tape, Self healing mat and Craft knife.

Studies with master Arabic calligraphers from the UAE, China and England in Riqa’a, Thuluth and Sudani scripts. Also studied classical Latin scripts Copperplate, Italic and Uncial scripts.
