IGCSE Physics YR 10

IGCSE Physics YR 10 introduces students to the depth, precision and problem-solving discipline required for IGCSE Physics. Students build strong foundations in forces, motion, energy, electricity, waves, magnetism, practical skills, calculations, graphs and scientific explanation.

The course helps students move from general science knowledge into more precise IGCSE-level Physics. They learn how physical systems work, how to use formulae accurately, how to handle units correctly and how to begin answering examination-style questions with clarity and confidence.

What this course develops

Physics at Year 10 develops the foundations students need before the final examination year. Students begin building secure understanding of key physical principles while developing mathematical accuracy, careful reasoning and evidence-based scientific thinking.

Learning focus
Forces, motion, energy, electricity, waves, magnetism, practical skills, formula use, data handling, graphs, diagrams and scientific vocabulary.
How students grow
Students become more precise, more logical and more confident when explaining physical ideas, interpreting evidence and applying calculations to scientific problems.
Parent outcome
Parents should expect a structured IGCSE foundation course that prepares students for deeper Year 11 revision, examination practice and confident scientific problem-solving.

Why Year 10 Physics matters

Year 10 is where students begin the serious IGCSE Physics pathway. The focus is on building strong conceptual and mathematical foundations before the more intensive examination preparation of Year 11. Students learn how to understand physical principles, not simply memorise formulae.

Build secure foundations
Students develop understanding of key Physics topics so that future revision becomes more meaningful and less overwhelming.
Think scientifically
Students practise linking concepts with evidence, diagrams, calculations, investigations and real physical examples.
Prepare for Year 11
Students begin developing the formula fluency, topic knowledge and question-answering habits needed for final examination readiness.

How students learn

Lessons combine clear teaching, retrieval practice, worked examples, calculations, diagrams, guided questioning, practical-context work and regular written practice. Students are supported to understand physical ideas step by step and apply them accurately.

Concept teaching
Students are introduced to physical ideas through clear explanations, examples, diagrams, key terms and carefully modelled problem-solving.
Active practice
Students complete recall tasks, formula substitution, graph interpretation, circuit work, practical questions and foundation exam-style responses.
Feedback and improvement
Students improve through correction, model answers, guided feedback and repeated practice with increasingly challenging questions.

Core Physics Skills

The course develops the scientific and mathematical skills students need throughout the IGCSE pathway. Students learn how to observe carefully, calculate accurately, explain clearly and use evidence to support physical understanding.

Formulae and units
Students practise selecting formulae, substituting values, rearranging equations, calculating accurately and using correct units.
Graphs and diagrams
Students learn to interpret motion graphs, circuit diagrams, wave diagrams, ray diagrams, data tables and practical results.
Practical understanding
Students build understanding of variables, fair testing, controls, reliability, accuracy, uncertainty, conclusions and practical method questions.

Examination Foundations

Although Year 10 is not the final examination year, students begin learning how IGCSE Physics questions work. They practise using command words, reading questions carefully, selecting relevant information and writing answers that are specific rather than vague.

Command words
Students begin practising responses to command words such as describe, explain, calculate, compare, suggest and evaluate.
Structured answers
Students learn how to write answers that are focused, accurate and supported by correct scientific vocabulary, formulae and units.
Revision habits
Students begin organising knowledge by topic, definitions, formulae, diagrams, practical skills and recurring mistakes.

Class Timetable

Class times are aligned to the current Stewards.ONE 2026/27 prospectus timetable and may be refined before the start of term. Year 10 IGCSE Physics is listed as a 2-period weekly subject.

Year Group Day Time Teacher
Year 10 Monday 12:50 to 13:40 Saima Khan
Year 10 Thursday 09:00 to 09:50 Saima Khan

What parents should expect

Parents should expect a structured and purposeful Physics course that prepares students for the final IGCSE year. Students will be expected to revise regularly, learn key formulae, practise calculations, complete written tasks and respond carefully to feedback.

Stronger physical understanding
Students build clear knowledge of key physical principles, systems and relationships across the IGCSE course.
Clearer scientific expression
Students practise explaining ideas accurately using correct scientific vocabulary, formulae, units and structured reasoning.
Readiness for Year 11
Students develop the foundations needed for more focused revision, examination practice and timed question preparation in Year 11.
