IGCSE Biology YR 10

IGCSE Biology YR 10 introduces students to the depth, vocabulary and scientific discipline required for IGCSE Biology. Students build strong foundations in biological concepts, practical understanding, data interpretation, scientific explanation and structured written responses.

The course helps students move from general science knowledge into more precise IGCSE-level Biology. They learn how living systems work, how to use scientific language accurately, how to interpret diagrams and data, and how to begin answering examination-style questions with clarity and confidence.

What this course develops

Biology at Year 10 develops the foundations students need before the final examination year. Students begin building secure knowledge across key biological systems while developing the habits of careful observation, accurate explanation and evidence-based scientific thinking.

Learning focus
Cell biology, human biology, plant biology, ecology, genetics, biological processes, practical skills, diagrams, data handling and scientific vocabulary.
How students grow
Students become more precise, more observant and more confident when explaining biological ideas, interpreting evidence and applying knowledge to new contexts.
Parent outcome
Parents should expect a structured IGCSE foundation course that prepares students for deeper Year 11 revision, examination practice and scientific confidence.

Watch a Sample Biology Lesson

See how scientific understanding is developed at Stewards.ONE. This sample video gives parents and students a feel for the clear, structured and evidence-based approach used in Biology lessons.

Students are guided to understand key concepts, use accurate scientific vocabulary and connect biological ideas to diagrams, data and examination-style reasoning.

Why Year 10 Biology matters

Year 10 is where students begin the serious IGCSE Biology pathway. The focus is on building strong conceptual foundations before the more intensive examination preparation of Year 11. Students learn how to understand processes, not simply memorise facts.

Build secure foundations
Students develop understanding of key biological topics so that future revision becomes more meaningful and less overwhelming.
Think scientifically
Students practise making links between concepts, evidence, diagrams, investigations and real biological examples.
Prepare for Year 11
Students begin developing the vocabulary, topic knowledge and question-answering habits needed for final examination readiness.

How students learn

Lessons combine clear teaching, retrieval practice, diagrams, guided questioning, data interpretation, practical-context work and regular written practice. Students are supported to understand biological ideas step by step and explain them accurately.

Concept teaching
Students are introduced to biological ideas through clear explanations, examples, diagrams and key terminology.
Active practice
Students complete recall tasks, diagram labelling, short explanations, graph interpretation, practical questions and foundation exam-style responses.
Feedback and improvement
Students improve through correction, model answers, guided feedback and repeated practice with increasingly challenging questions.

Core Biology Skills

The course develops the scientific skills students need throughout the IGCSE pathway. Students learn how to observe carefully, describe accurately, explain clearly and use evidence to support biological understanding.

Scientific vocabulary
Students practise using accurate biological terminology so their answers become clearer, more precise and more mature.
Data and diagrams
Students learn to interpret graphs, tables, biological diagrams, food webs, genetic information and experimental results.
Practical understanding
Students build understanding of variables, fair testing, controls, reliability, accuracy, conclusions and practical method questions.

Examination Foundations

Although Year 10 is not the final examination year, students begin learning how IGCSE Biology questions work. They practise using command words, reading questions carefully, selecting relevant knowledge and writing answers that are specific rather than vague.

Command words
Students begin practising responses to command words such as describe, explain, compare, calculate, suggest and evaluate.
Structured answers
Students learn how to write answers that are focused, accurate and supported by the correct biological vocabulary.
Revision habits
Students begin organising knowledge by topic, definitions, processes, diagrams and recurring mistakes.

Class Timetable

Class times are aligned to the current Stewards.ONE 2026/27 prospectus timetable and may be refined before the start of term. Year 10 IGCSE Biology is listed as a 2-period weekly subject.

Year Group Day Time Teacher
Year 10 Monday 09:00 to 09:50 Angela Wood
Year 10 Wednesday 09:00 to 09:50 Angela Wood

What parents should expect

Parents should expect a structured and purposeful Biology course that prepares students for the final IGCSE year. Students will be expected to revise regularly, learn key terminology, practise diagrams, complete written tasks and respond carefully to feedback.

Stronger biological understanding
Students build clear knowledge of key biological systems, processes and relationships across the IGCSE course.
Clearer scientific expression
Students practise explaining ideas accurately using correct biological vocabulary and structured sentences.
Readiness for Year 11
Students develop the foundations needed for more focused revision, examination practice and timed question preparation in Year 11.
