Why Sewing matters
Sewing is a practical life skill and a creative discipline. It teaches students to measure carefully, handle tools responsibly, work with materials, follow a process and pay attention to detail. It also gives students the satisfaction of making, repairing or adjusting something with their own hands.

Module Breakdown
The course is organised into three practical modules. Each module builds on the previous one so that students move from basic hand sewing into repairs, machine awareness and a final product.
Students learn how to thread a needle, sew neatly by hand, use different hand stitches and understand when each stitch is useful. They also practise basic repairs such as buttons, buttonholes, hems, holes and patching.
Students are introduced to how a sewing machine is threaded, used and cared for. They also explore practical techniques such as inserting elastic, attaching a pocket and installing a zipper.
Students complete a first official sewing project, choosing between a tote bag or pencil case. The project focuses mainly on hand sewing, with opportunities to use a sewing machine where appropriate.
Assessment and materials
Assessment is practical. Students are assessed through participation, safe tool use, technique, care, accuracy and completion of their final product. The aim is not perfection, but visible progress, careful work and successful application of the skills taught.
Students are assessed through their sewing practice, repair tasks, technique development and final project.
Students will need to provide their own fabric for the Module 3 final product.
Students who enjoy the course may progress to Key Stage Level 3 or equivalent sewing workshops and further creative textile courses.
